R.I.P. Satoru Iwata

So, if you're a gamer, especially if you are a Nintendo fan like me, you've certainly heard the news; Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11th, 2015. He was 55. Some of you may think this is old, but no, it's still rather young. A bile duct growth appears to be the cause. Signs of this were already present at last year's E3 (Iwata was unable to attend and underwent surgery to remove a bile duct growth). I don't think anyone believed the problem was this major. And yet, it happened. The president of Nintendo has left the scene...

I tend to think that, in order to properly honor a person's death, we don't mourn and cry. Well, we CAN cry and mourn, but in the end all we get is sadness. I prefer to look at that person's achievements and remember the great times we had with him or her. When Robin Williams passed away in 2014, I didn't write a blog post about it because it wasn't a person we came to know thanks to video games (though he was definitely a geek like all of us, what with calling his daughter Zelda). I tried to remember the man for all the great movies he was a part of, all these films that gave me plenty of chuckles, his contributions to the world. Well, that's the same for Mr. Satoru Iwata. He became president of Nintendo in 2002. Before that, he was a programmer at HAL Laboratories. There, he contributed to the creation of games that are now adored, whether it's the very first Kirby game, or EarthBound. He produced the very first Super Smash Bros. game; this franchise is now one of the most famous fighting game franchises of all time. He also worked a great deal on the Pokémon series; among others, he worked on the data compression tool that allowed the development team to include both Johto AND Kanto in Pokémon Gold and Silver. He was also executive producers for many games here and there, some from franchises that haven't been mentioned in this post so far: Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Fusion, Animal Crossing, Star Fox Adventures, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, WarioWare, Inc: Mega Microgames... The list goes on and on, so here it is. In fact, he was even an executive producer on Super Paper Mario, which I'm going to review soon. I might also review Pokémon HeartGold soon, as an homage.

Some could also say Satoru Iwata was close to his public. Instead of one mega-show at E3, he preferred to appear in many smaller shows where he would address directly the previewed game's audience. Kotaku describes him as a "one-man GIF generator". Probably because those shows were always big on creativity - of course - and on comedy.

I offer my condolences to everyone who knew him, whether it's in his personal life, or at Nintendo. He has left behind a great legacy, and instead of judging the man on his mistakes, let's honor his career. He created some of our best childhood memories. He will live on through his achievements at Nintendo.

VGFlicks: Scott Pilgrim VS. The World (Part 5)

Scott Pilgrim VS The World review
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5

In Part 4, Scott fought the Katayanagi twins, lost Ramona, then went and fought Gideon and lost. Well, that’s a common thing against final bosses… Oh, he died, too. Anyway, he had gained an extra life, so he’s now back, and he knows exactly what’s awaiting him at the Chaos Theater. Silly Gideon, Scott is too tough to die. Through the fire and the flames he’ll carry on!

Scott doesn’t waste any time with the guards, gets to the elevator, descends and winds up in the main room. This time, he makes a decent apology to Kim Pine for the failed relationship he had with her. Scott also tells Neil he's a better bassist for the band. Hey, Nordegraf, now's your time to shine! Scott then goes towards Gideon while citing many of the reasons the seventh ex sucks. He also takes that opportunity to mock the Chaos Theater, Gideon’s sound garden. Go, Scott! Stab him with all you got! A love sword, a kitchen knife, nine inch nails if that’s all you can find! Kick this guy so high he’ll see the curvature of the Earth!

So... self-respect is better than love? I don't see the logic there.
But this time, Scott isn’t fighting for Ramona… he’s fighting for himself! Once again, a sword appears in his chest, but this time it’s the Power of Self-Respect. What I love about this idea is that in the previous attempt, Scott was still treating Ramona as a thing to acquire, someone to save. This way, he was doing something similar to the evil exes, who were treating her more like a possession than an actual person. The power of love is good, but that’s not enough to carry a relationship, and that’s especially true if you don’t consider your loved one as your equal. However, the power of self-respect means that Scott is not letting the others, especially the evil exes, dictate his life, and he’ll fight for his own freedom to date the girl he loves. And no one should get in his way. This statement can be summed up as Scott Pilgrim Grows A Pair And Lets Nobody March On Him Anymore. It’s like Scott saying “Gideon, you’re not gonna pull me under, down to your level!”

VGFlicks: Scott Pilgrim VS. The World (Part 4)

Scott Pilgrim VS The World review
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5

In part 3, Scott Pilgrim defeated exes number 3 and 4, and he has learned that exes 5 and 6 are gonna be fighting him at the same time… during the Battle of the Bands. (Gonna spoil this: When Gideon comes around, expect lots and lots of musical references to a band that began doing music about 50 years ago and is still going strong. That’s all I’m gonna say.)

Scott is ready.

What the Hell do you mean, "ACTUALLY NO"?
Man, I hate when text intrudes into the picture.
As it turns out, both Sex Bob-Omb and the Katayanagi twins are on-stage at the same time. Each band on a side of the room, with the crowd in the middle. ...Who's the dumbass who thought about that?? The members of Sex Bob-Omb install themselves on the smaller stage of the two (because they couldn’t afford the big-ass stage the Katayanagis got, I suppose?), and notice Ramona in the crowd, speaking to a guy facing the other way. She’s changed her hair color, once again. Guess she was having a green day. The guy she’s talking to turns around… and man, I don’t know who he is yet, but I already want to punch him. Just this air of superiority, this smug grin on this jerkass face… I’ve got no sympathy for that devil.

All it took was one picture and I bet you, too, already hate that guy.

VGFlicks: Scott Pilgrim VS. The World (Part 3)

Scott Pilgrim VS The World review
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5

(Still keeping track of the music challenge? For some exes, I’m referencing certain bands in particular. As an example, the first half of this part contains references to the band that did the music for Clash At Demonhead. Get your Wikipedia ready!)

Yadda yadda Ramona, yadda yadda evil exes, yadda yadda gay roommate, yadda yadda Scott Pilgrim is in deep trouble, yadda yadda Matthew Patel Lucas Lee Todd Ingram yadda yadda let’s get this started!

OH YEAH!
Also, I suspect the Kool-Aid Man will make a cameo soon.
The Clash At Demonhead opens under a thunder of applause, as Envy Adams, portrayed by Brie Larson, starts singing. Todd Ingram, Ex #3, at the bass. Their drummer, Lynette Guycott… was a tad more important in the book and is more like a background element here. Envy, who is blonde in the movie but was brunette (or redhead? Or auburn?) in the book, really gives a great performance for the public at Lee’s Palace, which gives the already-neurotic Stephen Stills an even greater stress. I should mention Envy hired Todd Ingram as bassist after Scott left her band. Only after this did the Clash At Demonhead left the old, horrible, static anonymity, and became part of mainstream music.
